About the SPACE
"Maybe it's just old-fashioned of me to think
that young artists should bring their own stuff with them into the art
world, and their own friends as well, and then refashion that world to
suit their own purposes...without that liberating ideal, we will be left
with a ritualized cultural exchange in which artists and objects, selected
by professionals, submit themselves to the vagaries of casual, public
spectatorship in officially sanctioned venues."
Cricket Engine Gallery was inspired by the words above, and by the space itself. We've had many viewing experiences in the fine arts, from big name gallery openings, fighting upstream through blockbuster museum shows, to seeking out obscure community centers, and one-day experimental happenings. It seemed that a middle ground was lacking, especially in the East Bay art scene.
We wanted longer, better shows for less money, and less hassle.
Fortunately, we have the room.
Cricket Engine Gallery offers high ceilings and lots
of unbroken wall space. The Gallery is 19' x 23', with hardwood
floors, gallery track lighting, and two small skylights for plenty
of natural light. The Gallery is located in the 5th avenue marina,
two minutes from Jack London Square, in an established and diverse arts
In Cricket Engine Gallery artists can work closely with the space on their own terms, and have a good deal of time in which to hang the show, have the show, absorb the experience, and document it properly. It's a place where artists can come to look at work, talk about it, and also where art enthusiasts would feel welcome to partake in the conversation and learn about the work from the artist.
We are looking for artists with either a BA, or BFA in Fine Art, or an equivalent level portfolio that shows a coherent focus in a body of work.
Cricket Engine is currently accepting applications for shows of two-week intervals, beginning on the 1st and 3rd Sunday of each month. Rates are set at $150.00 for two weeks, with a $60.00 (cash) refundable deposit for key and clean-up.
We are looking for artists with a professional commitment
to the arts, and offer scheduling priority to artists with at least a
Bachelor of Fine Arts or an equivalent level portfolio that shows a mastery
of material and coherent focus in a body of work.
We encourage all artists to have an opening reception for their shows, and will gladly share our growing mailing list for your publicity.
